Lectro's tip
Know where your main breaker is before you need it. Walk to the panel once, read the labels and keep a flashlight nearby.
Signs You Need Electrical Repair
Most electrical problems give a warning before they fail completely. These are the calls we get most often.
Outlets that stopped working
One dead outlet, or a whole row of them, can come from a tripped GFCI in another room, a tripped breaker, a loose connection behind a device or a worn-out receptacle. A tester finds the cause faster than guessing does.
Breakers that keep tripping
A breaker trips for a reason: an overload, a short, a ground fault or an arc fault. Resetting it again and again is a warning, not a fix. Stop if the breaker will not stay on or feels hot.
Flickering or dimming lights
One flickering bulb is often the bulb itself or a dimmer that does not suit LED lamps. Several lights that dim when the furnace blower, sump pump or central air starts can point to a loose connection. That deserves a closer look.
Warm, buzzing or discolored outlets and switches
Heat, buzzing and brown marks around a cover plate are signs of a loose or overloaded connection. Unplug what is on that outlet, stop using it and call us.
Old fuse boxes and older wiring
Many older homes still have screw-in fuses, ungrounded two-prong outlets or cloth-covered wire. These systems were not built for today's loads. We can repair what is failing and tell you plainly what should be replaced.

What to Do Before You Call
If you smell burning, see sparks or see smoke, turn off the breaker only if you can do it safely, leave the area and call 911. If a power line is down, stay far away and call 911, then DTE Energy or your electric utility. Call us about the repair once everyone is safe.
For a dead outlet or a light that will not come on, a few safe checks often bring the power back:
Press reset on nearby GFCI outlets, especially in the kitchen, bathrooms, garage, basement and outside.
Look in the panel for a breaker that sits between on and off. Push it fully off, then back on.
Unplug what was connected, then test the outlet with a lamp you know works.
Write down what was running when it happened and anything you already tried.
If none of that works, stop there. Do not open outlets, panels or junction boxes yourself. A photo of the panel with the door open and the labels visible helps us bring the right parts.
How Our Electrical Troubleshooting Works
Troubleshooting is detective work. The symptom shows up in one spot, but the cause is often somewhere else on the circuit.
You tell us what happens. When it started, what changed, and what else was running. Details that seem unrelated often matter.
We make the circuit safe. Power is shut off and verified before anything is opened.
We test, not guess. Meters and testers on devices, connections and breakers until the fault shows itself.
We explain what we found. You see the problem and hear what it means in plain words.
You approve a written estimate. The repair is priced before we do it.
We repair and test again. The circuit is checked under load before we pack up and clean the work area.
Many faults turn out to be a single loose wire nut, a backstabbed outlet or a worn breaker. Some point to damaged cable inside a wall. Either way, you know what you are paying for before work starts.

GFCI Outlet Installation
A GFCI outlet watches the current going out and coming back on a circuit. If some of it leaks to ground, possibly through a person, it shuts off in a fraction of a second.
Where GFCI protection belongs
Electrical code calls for GFCI protection near water and in damp spaces. That usually means kitchen countertops, bathrooms, laundry areas, garages, unfinished basements, crawl spaces and outdoor outlets. The list has grown over the years, so many older homes are missing protection in places that need it today.
Outlet or breaker
Protection can come from a GFCI outlet, which protects itself and the outlets after it, or from a GFCI breaker in the panel. We pick the one that fits your circuit, your panel and how easy the reset will be to reach.
Two-prong outlets in older homes
Code allows a GFCI as one way to replace an ungrounded two-prong outlet with a three-prong one, when it is labeled correctly. It adds shock protection but does not add a ground wire. We tell you which choice suits each room.
Press the test button once a month. If the outlet does not trip, or will not reset, it needs replacing.
Smoke Detector Installation
Hardwired smoke alarms run on house power with a battery backup. When they are interconnected, one alarm sounding sets off every alarm in the house, so a fire in the basement wakes someone upstairs.
Replacement: most smoke alarms carry a manufacture date on the back. The usual advice is to replace them about every ten years.
Placement: common guidance puts an alarm in each bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level, including the basement.
Carbon monoxide: homes with a gas furnace, gas water heater, attached garage or a standby generator should also have CO alarms near sleeping areas.
We replace old hardwired alarms, add new ones and connect them so they sound together. Requirements vary by project and by date, so your city or township building department has the final word for your address.
When a Repair Points to Bigger Work
Some repairs are a symptom of a system that has reached its limit. We tell you when that is the case and when it is not.
A panel with scorched breakers, rust or no open spaces may call for an electrical panel upgrade.
Lights that dim through the whole house can trace back to the meter or service cable. That is a job for 200 amp service upgrades and service repair.
Electronics or appliance boards that keep failing after storms make a case for whole house surge protection at the panel.
If long outages are the real problem, a home standby generator keeps the furnace, fridge and sump pump running.
We never push an upgrade to fix a problem a repair can solve. If one loose connection is the cause, that is what we fix.
What Electrical Repair Costs Depend On
A tripped GFCI and a failing service connection are very different jobs, so we price after testing. The main factors are:
How long it takes to find the fault, especially an intermittent one.
Where the problem is: an outlet you can reach, or cable inside a finished wall or ceiling.
Parts, such as GFCI and AFCI breakers, outlets, switches and smoke alarms.
Whether the work needs a permit and inspection.
You get a detailed written estimate before repair work starts, with no hidden charges. Quotes are free, and financing is available.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, 24-hour emergency service is available. Office hours for quotes and scheduling are Monday to Friday, 7 am to 5 pm. If something is sparking, smoking or smells hot, turn off the breaker if it is safe, leave the area and call 911 first. Then call us about the repair.
Usually an overload, a short circuit, a ground fault or an arc fault. Resetting it over and over is not a fix. If it will not stay on, or the breaker or panel feels hot, stop and call an electrician.
Often it is a loose bulb or a dimmer that does not suit LED lamps. When several lights flicker or dim as a large appliance starts, a loose connection may be the cause. That is worth testing before it gets worse.
In many cases, yes. Code allows a GFCI as a replacement for an ungrounded two-prong outlet when it is labeled correctly. It adds shock protection but not a ground, so some electronics may still need a grounded circuit.
The usual advice is about every ten years. Check the manufacture date printed on the back of each alarm. Test them monthly and replace backup batteries as the maker recommends.
