3D Electric handles Kohler Generator Installation for homes across Southeast Michigan, from sizing to the first test run. We are a family-owned, licensed and insured electrical contractor based in Belleville, with about two decades in the trade. Our Kohler Generator Installation service plans the generator, pad, automatic transfer switch, fuel line and permits as one job, with one written estimate.

We install and service Kohler, Generac and Honeywell home standby generators, so our advice starts with your house and your loads. If you already want a Kohler, the sections below show what the job includes, how sizing works and how service goes after the install.

What Our Kohler Generator Installation Includes

A home standby generator works only when every part around it is planned together. A Kohler job from 3D Electric covers the whole system, not just setting the unit.

Load review and sizing

We look at your panel, your large appliances and the circuits you cannot lose in an outage. The generator size comes from those numbers.

Pad and placement

The unit sits level on its pad at a spot that meets the clearances in Kohler's installation manual and your local code.

Automatic transfer switch

The transfer switch senses when utility power drops, starts the generator and moves your circuits over. When power returns, it switches back. We have installed 200 amp and 100 amp automatic transfer switches. Our generator transfer switch installation page explains the options.

Fuel line, permits and inspection

The generator needs a gas supply sized for it, plus the electrical and gas permits your town requires. Our generator permit guide lays out the usual steps.

Startup and walkthrough

We set the exercise schedule, run a transfer test and show you what normal looks and sounds like.

Sizing a Kohler Generator to Your Home

Size a standby generator by what you want running, not by the size of the house. A furnace blower, sump pump, fridge and a few lights need far less power than central air, an electric range and a dryer running at once.

Coverage goal

What it usually includes

Essential circuits

Furnace, sump pump, well pump, fridge, some lights and outlets

Most of the house

Essentials plus kitchen, laundry and more rooms, often with load management

Whole house

Everything, including central air or electric heat, on a larger unit

Why motors matter

Motors pull a surge of power when they start. Central air, a well pump and a sump pump starting together set the real size you need.

Load management

Load management modules shed big loads, such as central air or an electric range, when the generator nears its limit. They let a mid-size unit cover more of the house. Our guide on what size generator your house needs walks through the math.

How a Kohler Install Goes, Step by Step

Every house is different, but most Kohler installs follow the same order.

  1. Free quote visit. We check the panel, the gas meter, the spot for the unit and the loads you care about.

  2. Written estimate. You get a detailed estimate in advance that lists the generator, switch, pad, wiring and permits.

  3. Permits. The work is filed with your township or city building department.

  4. Pad and setting. The site is leveled, the pad goes down and the generator is set on it.

  5. Wiring and fuel. The transfer switch goes in near your panel, and the gas supply is connected.

  6. Inspections and startup. Inspectors check the work, then we run the system and walk you through the controls.

Floors are covered, work areas are contained, and we clean up before we leave.

Placement, Fuel and Michigan Weather

Where the generator sits affects safety, cost and how it sounds from your patio.

Clearances

Kohler lists minimum distances from windows, doors, vents and walls so exhaust stays out of the house. Your building department may add its own rules, and we plan around both.

Snow, runoff and drainage

Drifting snow, roof runoff and low spots that hold water all matter here. A good spot stays clear in January and drains in April.

Natural gas or propane

Most homes in this area run a standby unit on natural gas. The meter must be large enough for the generator plus your furnace, water heater and stove, and your gas utility may need to upsize it. Homes without gas service can use propane. Compare the two in our natural gas vs propane generator guide.

Short runs

A spot close to both the gas meter and the panel keeps wire and pipe runs short, which keeps the estimate lower.

Kohler, Generac or Honeywell

All three brands work the same basic way: a controller, an automatic transfer switch and a scheduled self-test. The right pick often comes down to the size you need, the fuel you have and the model you can get when you are ready.

Kohler's power business now operates under the name Rehlko, so you may see that name on manuals, parts and its website. 3D Electric is an independent electrical contractor. Warranty terms come from the manufacturer, so read the paperwork that comes with your unit and ask us about anything unclear.

Still deciding? Read our plain comparison of Generac vs Kohler home generators, or see our Generac generator installation page.

Kohler Generator Service and Repair

The weekly or monthly exercise run shows the unit starts. It does not show that the oil is old or the battery is weak.

Routine maintenance

A Kohler standby unit needs oil, filters, spark plugs and a battery check on the schedule in its manual, plus a transfer test under load. A long outage adds run hours fast and can move your next service sooner. Our generator maintenance service covers that work.

When it will not start or transfer

Take a photo of any fault message on the controller and have the model and serial number ready. Keep clear of the unit while it is in auto, since it can start without warning. Our generator repair team finds the cause and quotes the fix before doing it. 24-hour emergency service available. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 7 am to 5 pm.

What Changes the Price of a Kohler Installation

The generator is only part of the total. These items change the estimate from one house to the next:

  • The generator size and whether you want whole-home or essential-circuit coverage

  • The transfer switch amperage and any load management modules

  • The distance from the pad to the panel and to the gas meter

  • Whether the gas meter needs upsizing

  • The condition of your panel, since an old or full panel may need work first

  • Permit fees in your township or city

Our whole house generator cost guide explains each factor. Straightforward pricing is one of our guarantees: a detailed written estimate in advance, with no hidden charges. Financing is available.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes. 3D Electric installs and services Kohler, Generac and Honeywell home standby generators. Tell us the Kohler model you have in mind, and we will check it against your loads, fuel and electrical service before you buy.

  • It depends on what you want running during an outage and whether you want the whole house or only essential circuits. Motor loads like central air, a well pump and a sump pump drive the size more than square footage does. We do a load review at the free quote visit and size the unit to it.

  • Kohler home standby models are built to run on natural gas or propane (LP). Output is usually a little lower on natural gas, so read the spec sheet for the fuel you will use. Your gas meter also has to be large enough for the generator and your other gas appliances.

  • Yes. A standby generator usually needs an electrical permit and, for a gas unit, a gas permit, each with an inspection. Your township or city building department issues the permits, so confirm current requirements for your address. We build the permit steps into the plan.

  • Call with the model and serial number from the label on the unit and tell us what it is doing. We will talk through what it needs, and any repair is explained and quoted before we start. 24-hour emergency service available.

  • The generator size, the transfer switch, load management, the distance to your panel and gas meter, gas meter capacity, panel condition and permit fees all change the total. Every house is different, so we give free written quotes. Financing is available.
