Lectro's tip
Before your quote visit, walk the house and jot down what you can't go without in an outage, like the sump pump, well pump, furnace or freezer.
Generator services in Belleville

Why Belleville homes add standby power
Storms and trees
The National Weather Service confirmed an EF-1 tornado near Belleville on August 24, 2023, with winds up to 90 mph. A second EF-1 hit Van Buren Township and Belleville on April 4, 2026. It touched down south of Martz Road, tracked northeast along Hull Road and crossed Sumpter Road.
Trees cause more of the everyday trouble. A DTE representative said the Potter Drive and Huron River Drive area had above-typical outages for two years, and about two thirds came from overgrown trees.
The grid work DTE has underway
DTE is rebuilding Belleville's electric system: about 10 miles of overhead lines and poles, tree trimming and a substation expansion. Roughly three miles were finished by November 2025 on High Street and W. Huron River Drive. A new Van Buren Township substation near Ecorse Road and I-275 was energized in October 2025.
That work should help. It still can't stop a limb from landing on the line that feeds your house. A standby generator is the part of the plan that sits on your own lot and starts on its own.

What a generator installation includes
A standby system is several parts that have to work together. Your free written quote spells out each one:
Load calculation. We list what must stay on, such as a sump pump, well pump, furnace blower, fridge or central air.
The generator. We install and service Generac, Honeywell and Kohler units. Ask us about other brands.
Pad and placement. Level, well-drained ground that meets the clearances in the manufacturer's manual.
Transfer equipment. An automatic transfer switch, sized to your service, that keeps generator power off DTE's lines.
Wiring and fuel. The electrical run from the unit to the switch and panel, plus the gas or propane connection by the right trade.
Permit, inspection and startup. We file the electrical permit, meet the inspector, then test a real transfer with you watching.

Sizing and fuel for in-town and rural lots
Size comes from your loads, not your neighbor's unit
Our 22 kW Honeywell and 35 kW Generac installs in Belleville were each sized for that house. A small ranch near downtown and a farmhouse with a well, central air and a shop can need very different units. We add up your loads at the visit before we name a size. The generator cost factors explain how size, fuel and wire length move the price.
Natural gas inside the city and the subdivisions
Many homes in town and in the Van Buren subdivisions already have a gas meter. A generator tied to it never needs a refill. Your gas company depends on your address, so check your bill, and ask your gas utility whether the meter can carry the added load.
Propane out in Sumpter Township
Sumpter covers about 37 square miles at roughly 259 people per square mile. Plenty of those homes sit on acreage, beyond a gas main, and pull water from a well. There the generator runs on propane from a tank on your property. Tank size sets how long you can run between deliveries.
Permits for Belleville, Van Buren and Sumpter addresses
A 48111 mailing address doesn't tell you which office issues the permit. The City of Belleville sits entirely inside Van Buren Township, and each runs its own building department.
City of Belleville. Homes inside city limits go through the City of Belleville Building Department.
Van Buren Charter Township. Township addresses, including Belleville North, Edgewater Heights, French Landing and Rawsonville, go through the township's Building, Planning & Economic Development department, which takes applications online.
Sumpter Township. Sumpter has its own steps. We confirm them for your address when we quote.
We pull the electrical permit and book the inspection. The gas line has its own permit, held by whoever does that work. Offices change forms and fees, so confirm current requirements for your address. Our generator permit guide covers what inspectors check.
How a Belleville generator job runs
Site visit. We drive over from the shop, look at the panel, the meter and the outside walls, and talk through what has to stay on.
Written quote. You get a detailed estimate in advance with no hidden charges. Financing is available.
Permit. We file with the city or township that covers your house.
Install day. The pad, transfer switch and wiring go in. Plan on your power being off for part of the day.
Inspection and startup. After the inspector signs off, we start the unit, set its exercise schedule and cut utility power to watch it take the house.
We cover floors, keep dust and debris inside the work area and clean up before we leave. That is our property protection guarantee, and it applies to every Belleville job.
Placement on lake lots, older homes and acreage
Belleville Lake properties
Belleville Lake runs about six miles and covers roughly 1,200 acres, the largest inland lake in Wayne County. Yards on the water often slope toward the shore. The level, dry spot for a pad is usually on the street side, near the gas meter.
Older houses near downtown
Belleville was platted in 1847, and some homes near the center of town still have small services or full panels. If the panel can't take a transfer switch, we plan the upgrade into the same job. Our Belleville electrician team handles that panel and service work.
Long driveways and detached buildings
On rural lots the generator may sit far from the panel, or you may want a barn or shop covered. We measure the wire run at the visit, since trench length changes the quote.

Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on where the house sits. Homes inside city limits go through the City of Belleville Building Department, and Van Buren Township addresses go through the township's building department. Sumpter Township has its own process. We confirm the right office for your address when we quote.
There is no standard size. Our Belleville installs include a 22 kW Honeywell and a 35 kW Generac, and each came from that home's own load list. We add up your must-run loads at the site visit before we recommend a unit.
Yes. Many rural homes in Sumpter Township run their generator on propane from a tank on the property. We size the unit and wire it, and you set up the tank and deliveries with your propane supplier.
We install and service Generac, Honeywell and Kohler home standby generators. If you are looking at another brand, ask us about it when you call.
The rebuild should mean fewer outages over time. It can't keep a tornado or a falling limb off the line to your house. If a long outage would stop your well, flood your basement or shut off medical equipment, a generator is worth pricing.
