3D Electric provides Generator Repair Belleville, MI from our own office in Belleville, 48111, so a broken standby unit in town is a local call for us. We work on Generac, Honeywell and Kohler home standby generators in the city, Van Buren Township and Sumpter Township. This page on Generator Repair Belleville, MI covers the faults we see most in this area, what storms here do to a generator and how a repair visit runs from first call to load test.

We are a family-owned, licensed and insured electrical contractor with about two decades of work around Belleville. Every repair gets a written quote before any parts go in. Write the alarm name and the status light color on a sticky note inside your electrical panel door, so it is handy when you call.

Why a generator failure hits Belleville homes hard

A lot of houses near Belleville Lake and the Huron River have finished basements that depend on a sump pump. Out in Sumpter Township, many homes run on a private well, so no power means no water at the tap. When the standby unit fails during an outage, those two loads are usually the first thing people notice.

Most of the area gets its electricity from DTE Energy over overhead lines that run under old trees. A DTE representative told local news that the Potter Drive and Huron River Drive area saw above-typical outages for two years, mostly from overgrown trees. DTE is now rebuilding about 10 miles of Belleville lines and poles, and that should help. Until the work is done, a generator that starts on cue still matters.

Local installs we know well

We put in a 35 kW Generac and a 22 kW Honeywell for Belleville households. Those two sit at opposite ends of the size range, so we know both the air-cooled and the larger liquid-cooled kind of system.

Symptoms and the first thing we check

Tell us what you saw and heard, and read the controller screen word for word. This table shows where a diagnosis usually starts.

What happened

Where we look first

Silent when the power went out

Battery, battery charger, controller set to Off instead of Auto

Cranks but never catches (Overcrank alarm)

Fuel valve, gas pressure, spark plugs, oil level

Engine runs, house stays dark

Generator main breaker, transfer switch, control wires

Quits when the central air kicks on

Load management modules, unit size versus load

Stops after a day or two of running

Low oil, overheating, blocked air openings

Skipped its weekly exercise

Controller clock reset after a battery swap or long power loss

Natural gas and propane

Houses on a gas main feed the unit natural gas from the local gas utility. Where no main runs, as on some Sumpter Township acreage, the unit may burn propane. A low tank or an iced regulator can starve the engine, so check the gauge before you call.

Storm damage checks in Van Buren and Sumpter

The National Weather Service confirmed an EF1 tornado west of Belleville in August 2023, with winds up to 90 mph. Another EF1 touched down south of Martz Road on April 4, 2026, followed Hull Road and crossed Sumpter Road. Storms like those throw limbs and siding into yards, and a generator enclosure sits right in the path.

After high winds, stand a few feet back and look before the next outage tests the unit:

  • A dented lid or a cabinet pushed off its pad.

  • Cracked or pulled conduit between the generator and the transfer switch.

  • A bent gas pipe or a loose fitting at the unit.

  • Leaves, shingles or branches packed against the air openings.

If the gas line looks damaged or you smell gas, leave it off and call your gas utility from a safe spot. For anything else, take photos and call us before you run it.

Electrical repairs beyond the engine

Plenty of generator calls end up being wiring problems, and wiring is our core trade. On a Belleville repair visit we check both halves of the system:

  • The charger circuit. A tripped breaker feeding the battery charger drains the battery a little with every exercise run.

  • The transfer switch. Worn contacts, a stuck mechanism or loose lugs can keep the house on dead utility lines. See how a correct hand-off works on our Belleville transfer switch page.

  • Underground and wall conduit. Mowers, snowblowers, fence posts and rodents can damage the wires between the unit and the switch.

  • The house panel. Overheated breakers or an aging panel can trip the generator the moment it takes the load.

When the problem turns out to be inside the house rather than at the generator, our Belleville electricians take it from there.

Safe steps before we arrive

  • Smell gas? Get everyone outside, then call 911 or your gas utility.

  • Call 911 for smoke, sparks or a burning smell at the unit.

  • Leave the cabinet closed while the controller is in Auto, since the engine can crank on its own.

  • Photograph the screen and the status light before you reset anything.

  • Report the outage to DTE so the crews know your street is down.

  • Never connect a portable generator through a wall outlet. Backfeeding is illegal and can kill a line worker.

Repair or replace, and which office issues the permit

A battery, charger, sensor or control wire is nearly always worth fixing. A failed engine or a control board that is hard to find for an older model may cost more than the unit is worth, and we will say so. Repair prices depend on the part, the time it takes to find the fault and any work around it. Our generator cost guide explains what moves the number on a replacement.

When a new unit goes in

A replacement is a new install and usually needs a new permit. The City of Belleville Building Department covers addresses inside the city. Van Buren Charter Township takes permit applications online, and Sumpter Township handles its own. Confirm current requirements for your address with that office, and read the generator permit guide before you start. If a Generac is on your list, see our Generac installs in Belleville.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Our office is in Belleville, MI 48111. Homes in the city, Van Buren Township and Sumpter Township are all close by, so a repair visit here is a short drive for our crew.

  • An exercise run is short and carries no house load. A weak battery, a gas line that is too small or a load management problem may only show up when the unit has to power the whole house.

  • Look from a few feet away first. If the cabinet, conduit or gas pipe is damaged, or you smell gas, leave it off and call. If it looks fine, take photos anyway and mention them at your next service.

  • Yes. We install and service Generac, Honeywell and Kohler home standby generators, and we repair all three. For other brands, call and ask before you book.

  • Usually, yes. The City of Belleville, Van Buren Charter Township and Sumpter Township each issue their own permits. Confirm current requirements for your address with that office.

  • Yes. 24-hour emergency service available. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 7 am to 5 pm. For fire, smoke or a gas smell, call 911 first.
