Lectro's tip

If you run a portable generator now, write down what you plug in during an outage. That list makes the sizing talk quick.

What a Long Livonia Outage Looks Like

August 2016

On August 16, 2016, about 17,000 DTE customers lost power, and most of them were in Livonia. The heaviest damage fell between Interstate 96 and 7 Mile Road, from Farmington Road west to Newburgh Road.

July 2026

After storms this July, about 19,000 customers were still without power on day five. WXYZ spoke with Livonia residents near West Chicago and Middlebelt who were still waiting. Some told the station they spent 20 to 40 dollars a day on fuel for portable generators.

Portable or permanent

A portable costs less on day one. It also means gas cans, a cord through a cracked window and an engine that has to stay well away from the house. A permanent unit runs on your gas line, starts on its own and needs no refueling trips. If you plan to keep the portable, a portable generator inlet and interlock is the safe way to connect it.

Whole House Generators for Postwar Livonia Homes

Livonia became a city in 1950 with 17,634 residents. By 1970 the count was 110,109. NeighborhoodScout estimates that about 61% of homes here date from the 1940s through the 1960s, and about 86% are single-family detached houses. Most Livonia generator jobs are on houses from that building boom.

What the install covers

A whole house generator in Livonia needs a pad, the unit, a gas connection, an automatic transfer switch and the wiring between them. We handle the electrical side from start to finish and coordinate the gas work. The home standby generator installation page goes through each part in more detail.

Brands we install

We install and service Generac, Honeywell and Kohler home standby generators. Our past jobs include 22 kW Generac and 22 kW Honeywell units on natural gas. If you want a Generac installer in Livonia, see how we approach Generac home generator installs before the visit.

Sizing an older house

A house from the 1950s often has a basement sump pump, a gas furnace, a fridge and a later central air system. We list the loads you want running, add them up and pick a unit that carries them. Some owners cover the whole house. Others back up a chosen set of circuits with a smaller unit.

Checking the Electrical Service First

A house built in the 1950s rarely still has its first panel, but many Livonia homes still run on a modest service. Before we quote a generator, we look at the service size, the panel condition and the space for new breakers.

When the panel needs work

A crowded panel or an aging service can make the generator job harder. In that case we may suggest an upgrade at the same time, so the transfer switch connects to sound equipment. Browse the residential and commercial electrical services we offer for the full list.

Whole panel or chosen circuits

A service-rated transfer switch can move the whole house to generator power. A smaller switch moves only the circuits you choose. The right choice depends on your service, your loads and the generator size.

Natural Gas in Livonia: Consumers Energy or DTE

DTE supplies electricity throughout Livonia. Gas is less uniform. Consumers Energy serves at least part of the city, and it replaced about 18 miles of gas pipe in Livonia in 2025. Other addresses may get gas from DTE, so check the name on your bill.

Which company serves you matters for one step. If the gas meter needs more capacity for the generator, that request goes to your gas utility. A standby unit also adds load to the gas line, so we plan the pipe size and length from the meter. Houses with no gas service can run a generator on a propane tank instead.

Livonia Generator Permits Through BS&A Online

The City of Livonia Inspection Department issues building permits from the City Hall Annex at 33000 Civic Center Drive. The city takes permit applications through BS&A Online. We file the electrical permit there and meet the inspector on site.

Gas and electrical inspections

The gas piping to the generator is reviewed under its own permit. We schedule the two inspections so they fit the install. Steps and fees can change, so confirm the current requirements for your address with the city. Our home generator permit guide explains how the pieces usually line up.

Addresses outside the city line

A house in Redford or Northville is outside Livonia, so a different building department issues the permit. We confirm the right office for your street before we file.

Placing a Generator on a Tight Livonia Lot

The Rosedale Gardens Historic District holds about 570 houses, mostly built from 1925 to 1960, on lots about 40 feet wide. Streets like these leave little room between houses. Many other Livonia blocks have a similar side yard squeeze.

Clearances we measure

Each generator brand sets minimum distances from windows, doors, vents and the gas meter. Local code adds its own rules. We measure those on site and compare them with the distance to the lot line. If a lot is too tight, we tell you before you pay for anything.

Short runs save money

A good spot usually sits close to both the gas meter and the electric meter. Short gas and wire runs cost less and leave less trench in the yard. We also look at noise toward your bedroom windows and your neighbor's.

Generator Repair and Service in Livonia

A standby generator can sit quiet for months and then has to start on a stormy night. Our generator repair visits cover no-start problems, fault codes, dead batteries and transfer switches that will not move. We work on Generac, Honeywell and Kohler units, including ones we did not install.

Routine generator service in Livonia keeps those calls rare. A yearly generator maintenance visit covers oil, filters, spark plugs, the battery and a test transfer.

24-hour emergency service available; office hours are Monday to Friday, 7 am to 5 pm.

From First Visit to Startup

  1. We visit on a weekday and look at your panel, both meters and the side yard.

  2. You rank the circuits that matter most, and we run the load math.

  3. You get a free written estimate with the unit, the switch and the scope spelled out.

  4. Once you approve it, we file with the city and line up the gas work.

  5. We set the pad and the unit, wire the transfer switch, pass inspection and run a live test while you watch.

Have your gas bill and a short list of must-run items ready for the first visit.

Livonia Neighborhoods and Nearby Cities

Next door, we also install standby generators for homeowners in Redford Township to the east and in Northville to the northwest. South of Livonia, see our pages for Westland and Garden City. The complete list of communities we serve shows every town we cover.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The City of Livonia Inspection Department at the City Hall Annex, 33000 Civic Center Drive, issues the permits. Applications go through BS&A Online, and we file the electrical permit for you. Gas piping has its own permit. Confirm current requirements for your address with the city.

  • It depends on your address. DTE supplies electricity across Livonia, and Consumers Energy serves at least part of the city for gas. Check the name on your gas bill before the estimate visit.

  • Often it can. The transfer switch and generator are sized to match your service and the loads you pick. If the panel is crowded or worn, we may suggest an upgrade at the same time.

  • The upfront cost of a standby unit is higher. During the July 2026 outage, some Livonia residents told WXYZ they spent 20 to 40 dollars a day on portable generator fuel. A standby unit on natural gas starts by itself and needs no refueling.

  • Sometimes. Lots there are about 40 feet wide, so clearances from windows, doors, vents and the gas meter decide it. We measure at the first visit and tell you plainly if the side yard is too tight.

  • Yes. We install Generac, Honeywell and Kohler home standby generators in Livonia. The brand and size come from a load calculation at a free weekday visit.

  • Yes. We repair and maintain Generac, Honeywell and Kohler home standby generators, including units another company installed. 24-hour emergency service available; office hours are Monday to Friday, 7 am to 5 pm.
