Lectro's tip
Check your property tax bill to see whether your home is in the city, Van Buren or Sumpter, because that decides which office handles your permit.
Our Belleville pages

Belleville, Van Buren and Sumpter Townships
Most people who say they live in Belleville live in one of three communities. They share the 48111 and 48112 ZIP codes, and part of Sumpter uses 48164. We work in all three.
City of Belleville
The city is small and walkable. It was platted in 1847, became a city in 1946 and counted 1,972 housing units in 2020. Downtown sits on the south shore of Belleville Lake, which the Huron River forms behind a dam. The lake runs about six miles and covers roughly 1,200 acres, the largest inland lake in Wayne County.
Van Buren Charter Township
The township surrounds the city on every side. Its neighborhoods include Belleville North, Edgewater Heights, French Landing and Rawsonville. I-94, I-275 and US-12 all cross it, so many homes here are newer subdivisions close to the highways.
Sumpter Township
To the south, Sumpter covers about 37 square miles with roughly 259 people per square mile. It is mostly rural, with acreage, pole barns and private wells.

What 3D Electric does in Belleville
The same crew handles both kinds of work, in houses, garages, pole barns and commercial spaces. Pick the page that matches your project.
Standby generators and backup power
Our Belleville generator installation page covers sizing, fuel, placement and the full install. We install and service Generac, Honeywell and Kohler home standby generators. For the bigger picture outside town, see our guide to whole house generator installation.
Electrical work for homes and businesses
The Belleville electrician page lists panel upgrades, 200 amp service, lighting, EV chargers, surge protection and troubleshooting. Our main electrical services overview explains each service in more depth.
Power and permits around town
DTE Energy supplies electricity here. Natural gas depends on your address, so check your bill to confirm your gas utility before planning a gas appliance or generator.
DTE is rebuilding Belleville's electric system, including about 10 miles of overhead lines and poles, tree trimming and a substation expansion. Crews finished roughly three miles on W. Huron River Drive and High Street by November 2025. That same fall, DTE energized a new substation in Van Buren Township near Ecorse Road and I-275.
Which office issues your permit
A Belleville mailing address does not tell you which office handles permits. Homes inside city limits go through the City of Belleville Building Department. Van Buren Township addresses go through the township's Building, Planning and Economic Development department, which takes applications online. Sumpter Township runs its own process. We pull the electrical permit for the work we do, and our generator permit guide explains the usual steps. Confirm current requirements with the office for your address.
