When a home standby unit lets you down, 3D Electric handles Generator Repair Ypsilanti, MI for Generac, Honeywell and Kohler generators in the city, Ypsilanti Township and Superior Township. We check the engine side and the electrical side on the same visit, because an alarm on the screen often starts in the wiring. This page on Generator Repair Ypsilanti, MI explains the faults we see around Ypsi, what to do while you wait and how a repair gets priced.

Our family-owned shop is in Belleville, about 10 to 12 miles east along I-94, and part of Ypsilanti Township even shares our 48111 ZIP code. We are licensed and insured, and every repair is quoted in writing before work begins. For new standby systems, sizing and fuel questions, see the Ypsilanti generator installation page. For the town itself and our other local pages, visit 3D Electric in Ypsilanti.

Lectro's tip

Tape the generator's model and serial number inside the breaker panel door, so you can read them by flashlight when the power is out.

Three kinds of Ypsilanti homes, three kinds of generator trouble

The repair call changes with the house, and Ypsilanti has three very different kinds.

Older houses in the historic district and Depot Town

The Ypsilanti Historic District is the second largest contiguous historic district in Michigan. When a generator trips the moment it takes the load in an older home, the cause can be a tired circuit or connection inside the house, not the generator.

Ypsilanti Township subdivisions

Ypsilanti Township has about 24,500 housing units, many on tight lots where the generator sits a few feet from the air conditioner. Here we often find a load management module that no longer sheds the AC, so the unit overloads on a hot afternoon outage.

Rural Superior Township

Out past Dixboro and around Frains Lake, homes are spread out and some run on well water. A well pump that starts while the furnace and fridge already run can pull the generator down.

What the September 2026 storm taught us about long outages

On September 3, 2026, a severe storm with a tornado warning knocked out power to about 7,486 customers in ZIP 48198 and 2,876 in 48197. Poles and lines came down on Cross Street, Maple Street and near North Adams and Emmet. Broken poles take longer to fix than a tripped line, so many generators in town ran far longer than their weekly exercise.

After a run like that, these are the problems that tend to show up:

  • Low oil shutdowns. An air-cooled engine burns some oil every hour. After a day or two it can trip a low oil pressure alarm.

  • Service reminders that were ignored. A maintenance alert left on the screen for months often means oil, filter and spark plugs are overdue.

  • Overload trips. With everyone home, more appliances run at once, and an undersized or poorly managed system trips its breaker.

  • Transfer switch wear. The switch moves the house twice per outage. Pitted contacts or a loose lug can heat up and fail.

Electrical faults that set off generator alarms

The battery charger circuit

The charger inside the unit runs off a 120-volt house circuit. If that breaker or a GFCI upstream trips, the battery drains a bit with every exercise and the next outage ends in an overcrank alarm.

Control wires and conduit

Thin control wires tell the transfer switch when the utility is back. A cut wire from a shovel, a mower or rodents can leave the generator running with the house still on the dead grid side. Our page on transfer switch installation in Ypsilanti shows how a healthy hand-off works.

Loose or overheated connections

Lugs in the switch, the panel or the generator breaker can loosen over years of heating and cooling. A burnt smell needs an electrician, not a reset. If the trouble traces back to the house panel, our Ypsilanti electrical services team takes it from there.

Before we arrive: safe steps for your household

  • Gas odor near the unit or the house? Get everyone out, then call your gas utility or 911 from a safe spot.

  • Smoke, sparks or a burning smell mean 911 first.

  • Leave the cover closed while the controller is in Auto. The engine can start on its own.

  • Write down or photograph the exact alarm text before you clear anything. Clear it one time only.

  • Stay away from wires that came down in the storm, and report them to DTE.

  • A portable generator never plugs into a wall outlet. Backfeeding is illegal and can kill a line worker. Use cords to single appliances, or ask about a generator interlock kit for an Ypsilanti panel.

  • Keep any portable outdoors and well away from windows and doors, and check that your CO alarms work.

24-hour emergency service available. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 7 am to 5 pm.

How a repair visit runs from call to final test

What to have ready when you call

  • The brand, model and kilowatt rating from the data label.

  • The alarm text and the color of the status light.

  • Your fuel: a natural gas meter or a propane tank, with the gauge reading.

On site

We load-test the battery, check the charger and its circuit, read the alarm history, measure fuel pressure while the engine works and open the transfer switch. Then you get the cause and a written price before any repair starts.

Proof it works

After the fix we cut utility power at the switch, watch the generator start and carry the house, then confirm it hands back cleanly. If a part has to be ordered, we tell you what can safely run in the meantime.

Repair or replace, and which office signs off

Batteries, chargers, sensors and control wiring are almost always worth fixing. A failed engine or a discontinued control board on an older unit can cost more than the generator is worth, and we will tell you that straight. Our guide to what a home generator costs lays out what sets the price.

A replacement counts as a new installation and needs a permit. Ypsilanti has three separate building offices:

Where the house sits

Who issues the permit

City of Ypsilanti

City of Ypsilanti Building Department

Ypsilanti Township

Charter Township of Ypsilanti Building Department

Superior Township

Superior Township, through its own electrical permit application

Confirm current requirements for your address, and see our generator permit guide. For how a new unit goes in, read about Generac installation for Ypsilanti homes. To keep a repaired unit healthy, book a yearly generator maintenance visit in Ypsilanti. Our regional Generac generator repair service page goes deeper on alarm codes. Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes. We work on Generac, Honeywell and Kohler standby units at homes of any age. On older houses we also check the panel and circuits the generator feeds, since aging wiring can cause trips that look like a generator fault.

  • Yes, for Generac, Honeywell and Kohler home standby units. Send the model, serial number and install date when you call. If you have another brand, ask us first.

  • A long run uses up oil and puts wear on the transfer switch. If the screen shows a maintenance or low oil alert, or the unit ran for more than a day, book a check before the next outage.

  • The unit may be too small for the starting load, or the load management module may not be shedding the AC as it should. We test the module and the breaker before suggesting any bigger change.

  • It depends on the address. The City of Ypsilanti, the Charter Township of Ypsilanti and Superior Township each run their own building office. Confirm current requirements for your address before work starts.

  • Yes. 24-hour emergency service available. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 7 am to 5 pm. For fire, smoke or a gas smell, call 911 first.
