3D Electric offers Generator Interlock Kit Installation Ypsilanti, MI for houses in the City of Ypsilanti, Ypsilanti Township and Superior Township. We mount a listed interlock on your main panel, add a generator breaker and wire an outdoor inlet box, so the portable you already own can carry the house through one cord. This page on Generator Interlock Kit Installation Ypsilanti, MI explains how that setup fits Ypsilanti's historic homes, lakeside subdivisions and township acreage.
We are a family-owned, licensed and insured shop in Belleville, roughly 10 to 12 miles east on I-94. Part of Ypsilanti Township even shares our 48111 ZIP code. Quotes are free and written down before any work begins. Standby units and our other local generator work are on the Ypsilanti generator installation page, and the 3D Electric Ypsilanti overview covers everything else we do in town.

Lectro's tip
Store the generator cord coiled beside the generator, not in the basement, so you never hunt for it in a dark house.
What the September 2026 storm showed Ypsilanti homeowners
On September 3, 2026, a severe storm under a tornado warning cut power to 7,486 DTE customers in ZIP 48198 and 2,876 in 48197. Poles and lines came down on Cross Street, Maple Street, North Adams and Emmet. Until crews finished, every house on those blocks lost its furnace blower, fridge and sump pump.
DTE says Ypsilanti outage time dropped 54 percent last year, and it plans more than 100 miles of tree trimming. Shorter outages still happen. An interlock lets a portable cover the gap without extension cords across the floor.
What a hookup usually keeps running
The furnace blower, which matters most from November through March.
The sump pump in basements near the Huron River and Ford Lake.
The fridge, the freezer, a few lights and the internet modem.
Which Ypsilanti office permits your interlock
An interlock and inlet box change your main panel, so plan on an electrical permit. Ypsilanti has three separate offices, and the right one depends on where the house sits, not on your mailing address.
Where the house is | Who issues the permit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
City of Ypsilanti | City Building Department | Uses its 2026 Trade Permit Application |
Ypsilanti Township | Charter Township of Ypsilanti Building Department | Lists a rough and a final electrical inspection |
Superior Township | Superior Township offices | Has its own electrical permit application |
Forms and fees change, so confirm current requirements for your address before work starts. We file the electrical permit as part of the job. Our guide to generator permits lists the questions worth asking the office.
How two inspections shape the schedule
Where a rough inspection applies, the inspector sees the new wiring before the panel is closed up. The final comes after the interlock is mounted and labeled. We schedule around both visits.
Historic District and Depot Town houses
Ypsilanti's Historic District is the second-largest contiguous historic district in Michigan, and Depot Town sits in that same old core. Many of these houses stand close to the sidewalk and to each other.
Keep the box off the front of the house
We usually put the inlet low on a side or rear wall near the panel, out of the street view. If your house is in the historic district, ask the city whether an exterior box needs review before we mount it.
Pick the generator spot with the neighbors in mind
A portable makes carbon monoxide, which you cannot see or smell. On a narrow lot it still has to sit in open air, away from your doors and windows and the house next door. We place the inlet so the cord reaches that spot without passing an open window.
When an old panel has no kit
Some panels in older houses have no listed interlock. A manual switch is often the answer; our page on transfer switch installation in Ypsilanti covers that option, and our interlock vs manual transfer switch comparison sets the two side by side. If the panel itself is worn out, our Ypsilanti electricians can replace it first.

Ford Lake and Huron River lots in the township
Ypsilanti Township wraps around Ford Lake on the city's south edge, and the Huron River runs through both. Yards that slope toward the water can stay soft for days after a storm.
We look for higher, level ground near the house first, then set the inlet within cord reach of it. A patio slab, a gravel pad or the end of the driveway often works. Keep it clear of downspouts and the sump discharge line.
Superior Township acreage, wells and detached garages
Superior Township is far less crowded, at about 421 people per square mile, and homes around Dixboro and Frains Lake sit on larger lots. Some of those houses draw water from a private well. A well pump is a 240-volt motor with a hard starting surge, so it often decides how big the generator must be.
Inlet size follows the generator
Most mid-size portables have a 30-amp, 240-volt twist-lock outlet and pair with a 30-amp inlet and cord. Larger units with a 50-amp outlet get a 50-amp inlet. A generator with only 120-volt outlets cannot feed the panel. Our home generator sizing guide shows how to add up your loads.
Keep the cord short
If the generator lives in a detached garage or pole barn, we put the inlet on the house wall that faces it. A short cord is easier to drag through snow.
Interlock now, standby later
An interlock is the lower-cost start. Someone still has to be home to roll the generator out, fuel it and switch the breakers in the right order. Households that commute on I-94 or US-12 every workday, or that rely on powered medical equipment, should price a standby unit too.
We install and service Generac, Honeywell and Kohler standby units, and our page on Generac generator installation in Ypsilanti explains how an automatic system works. For the full parts list, cord sizes and outage steps, see the regional interlock kit installation page.
What changes the price of an Ypsilanti interlock job
Your written quote depends on a few things we check at the visit:
Whether a listed kit is made for your panel's make and model.
Open slots for a two-pole generator breaker, or circuits that have to move.
How far the inlet box sits from the panel.
A 30-amp or 50-amp inlet and cord.
Permit fees at the city, Ypsilanti Township or Superior Township.
The generator cost guide explains each factor. To book a free visit, use the Ypsilanti quote request form or our main contact page, or call (734) 697-8477.

Frequently Asked Questions
Plan on one. The interlock and inlet box change your main panel, and the Charter Township of Ypsilanti Building Department lists rough and final electrical inspections. City and Superior Township addresses go through their own offices. Confirm current requirements for your address.
Usually, yes. We place it low on a side or rear wall near the panel, out of the street view. Ask the city whether an exterior box on your house needs review before work starts.
Not for a panel hookup. The inlet and generator breaker need a 240-volt outlet, usually a 30-amp or 50-amp twist-lock. If you are shopping for a generator, tell us at the quote visit and we will tell you which outlet to look for.
Often, if the generator is big enough for the pump's starting surge. We check the pump and your other loads at the visit. Our sizing guide shows how to add them up before you buy.
No. That cord backfeeds the house, its loose prongs are live, and generator power can flow out to DTE's lines and hurt a line worker. It is illegal. An interlock or transfer switch is the legal way to connect.
Yes. Belleville is about 10 to 12 miles east on I-94, and we work in the City of Ypsilanti, Ypsilanti Township and Superior Township. Quotes are free and written before work begins.
