3D Electric plans and wires EV Charger Installation Ann Arbor, MI jobs for houses in the city and in Pittsfield and Scio townships. Most of them are Level 2 chargers on a new 240-volt circuit, and the house decides more of the work than the car does. This page on EV Charger Installation Ann Arbor, MI covers what changes in Ann Arbor: older panels, garages set back on the lot, historic streets and two kinds of permit office.

We are a family-owned, licensed and insured electrical contractor based in Belleville, about 20 miles east along I-94. Every quote is free and written before work starts. For the rest of our local work, see the Ann Arbor electrician page, or start at the 3D Electric Ann Arbor overview.

Lectro's tip

Park in your usual spot and note which side the charge port is on, so the charger goes where the cable reaches without a stretch.

How Ann Arbor houses shape a charger job

Ann Arbor has close to 50,000 households, and the housing ranges from 19th-century homes near downtown to newer subdivisions on the township side. The age of the house tells us a lot before we open the panel.

Older city houses

On many older streets the garage, if there is one, sits at the back of the lot or opens onto an alley. Some owners park in the driveway beside the house instead. In both cases the panel is usually in the basement, on the far side from where the car sits. The wire run is the main design question, and we lay it out with you on site.

Pittsfield and Scio subdivisions

Newer homes in the townships often have an attached two-car garage with the panel close by. These are usually the shortest runs. The question there is space: a finished basement, a hot tub or a second furnace may already fill the panel.

Hills and trees

The city climbs from about 750 feet near the Huron River to over 1,000 feet in places, and it earned the name Tree Town. A buried line to a back garage has to work around slopes and big roots, so we call for a utility locate before any digging.

Will an older Ann Arbor panel carry a Level 2 charger?

A charger pulls steady current for hours. On a 100-amp service that already runs central air, an electric dryer and a basement dehumidifier, that can be more than the panel was built for. We add up what the house uses and count the charger on top before we quote.

  • It fits. The panel has spare capacity and an open space, and the job is a circuit and a charger.

  • It fits at a lower setting. Many chargers can be set to draw less. Overnight that is often plenty for a commute to campus or to work on US-23.

  • It fits with load management. A device slows charging while the dryer or air conditioner runs.

  • The panel comes first. Our panel upgrades for Ann Arbor homes cover a full or worn-out panel, and a service upgrade in Ann Arbor adds capacity to the whole house.

If a change is needed, the written quote says so up front. You decide before any work starts.

What your Ann Arbor charger install includes

  1. A look at the house. Panel, service size, where you park and the path the wire would take.

  2. A load check and a written quote. Circuit size, charger setting and any panel work, listed line by line.

  3. The permit. We pull the electrical permit with the city or your township.

  4. The circuit. A dedicated breaker and wire sized to the charger, in conduit where it runs outside or through a garage.

  5. Mounting. The charger or a 240-volt outlet placed where the cable reaches the charge port without strain.

  6. Testing and inspection. We set the charger to match the breaker, watch the car charge and meet the inspector.

The charger itself can be one you already bought or one you pick with our help. For breaker sizes, plug-in versus hardwired chargers and the Tesla Wall Connector, see our home EV charger installation guide.

Permits in the city and the townships

A new 240-volt circuit generally needs an electrical permit and an inspection. Which office handles it depends on the parcel, not the mailing address.

  • City of Ann Arbor: the Build, Rent, Inspect unit at 301 E. Huron St. takes permits in its online STREAM system.

  • Pittsfield Township and Scio Township: each runs its own permit office.

Some township homes carry an Ann Arbor mailing address, so we check the parcel before we apply. Confirm current requirements for your address with that office.

Historic districts

The Old West Side has been on the National Register since 1972 and is protected by city ordinances. If your house is in a historic district, ask the city whether a charger or conduit on an outside wall needs review. A charger inside the garage or on a rear wall usually keeps things simpler.

DTE power, storms and backup

DTE Energy supplies electricity to most of Ann Arbor. Consumers Energy serves the far western edge of Washtenaw County, so check your bill if you live out that way. Utility EV rates and programs change, so ask your utility what it offers before you buy a charger.

Big trees also mean outages. A July 2023 storm left more than 176,000 DTE customers without power, with limbs down around Ann Arbor. If you have a standby generator or plan one, the charger usually stays off the backup circuits so it cannot compete with the furnace and sump pump. We have installed a generator in Ann Arbor, and our generator installation in Ann Arbor page explains how we plan both on one service.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Usually, yes. It takes a buried circuit or feeder from the house panel, which means a trench and a utility locate first. If you want lights or outlets in the garage too, a small subpanel there can make more sense than a single circuit.

  • Often it can, at a lower charger setting or with load management. A load calculation tells us. If the service is too small, the quote shows the panel or service work before anything starts.

  • It can, mostly when equipment or conduit goes on a wall people see from the street. Ask the city about your house before we mount anything outside. A charger inside the garage is usually simpler.

  • Your township issues it through its own permit office, not the City of Ann Arbor. We check which office covers your parcel and pull the electrical permit. Confirm current requirements for your address.

  • It depends on the generator size and how the transfer switch is set up. In most homes the charger stays off the backup circuits so the furnace, fridge and sump pump come first. We plan that when we size the circuit.

  • Yes. We are based in Belleville, about 20 miles east, and we work across Ann Arbor, Pittsfield and Scio. Photos of your panel and parking spot help us quote on the first visit.
