3D Electric handles Generator Maintenance Ann Arbor, MI for home standby generators in the city and in Pittsfield and Scio townships. We are a family-owned, licensed and insured electrical contractor from Belleville, and we install and service Generac, Honeywell and Kohler units. This page on Generator Maintenance Ann Arbor, MI covers what a yearly visit checks and the local conditions that wear on an Ann Arbor generator: tree litter, sloped yards and long winter outages.

Our shop is about 18 to 22 miles away, so we book Ann Arbor service on planned days instead of squeezing it between other calls. If you do not own a generator yet, start with our Ann Arbor generator installation page. For everything else we do in town, see the 3D Electric Ann Arbor overview.

Snap a phone photo of the label on your generator so the model and serial number are handy when you book service.

Generac generator maintenance in Ann Arbor, part by part

Every visit follows the maintenance schedule printed in your generator's manual. On a typical air-cooled Generac Guardian, the work breaks down like this.

Part

What we do

Why it matters here

Oil and oil filter

Change on the manual's interval

Long outages add run hours fast

Air filter and spark plugs

Inspect, replace what is due

Worn parts make winter starts harder

Starting battery

Load-test, clean the terminals

A weak battery is a common no-start

Controller

Read alarm log, reset to automatic

Warnings show here before you notice

Vents and enclosure

Clear leaves, seeds and nests

Tree litter blocks cooling air

Transfer switch

Cut utility power, test the switchover

Only this proves the system works

Honeywell and Kohler units get the same kind of work on their own published intervals. If a part is worn, you get a written quote before we replace it. For the full checklist and seasonal advice, read about Generac generator maintenance across Southeast Michigan.

Generac standby generator on new pad in front of red brick wall

Tree Town is hard on generator vents

Ann Arbor's nickname is Tree Town. Those same yard and street trees drop something on the generator almost every season. The unit pulls cooling air through its side louvers, and a mat of wet leaves or spring seeds can choke that airflow. An engine that runs too hot can shut itself down partway through an outage.

Between our visits

  • Rake around the base and the louvers after the fall leaf drop.

  • Pick twigs and seed pods out of the vents by hand while the unit is at rest.

  • Keep firewood, trash bins and new plantings out of the clearance area in the manual.

  • Never open the enclosure while the controller is set to automatic, because the engine can start without warning.

Limbs above the enclosure

A heavy limb hanging over the generator is a risk in an ice storm. Have a tree service trim it back before winter. At each visit we point out anything near the unit that blocks air or access.

Hills, slopes and water around the pad

Ann Arbor is hilly. Elevations run from about 750 feet to just over 1,000, and the grades get steepest near the Huron River. On a sloped lot, rain and snowmelt drain toward the low side of the house, which is often where the gas meter and the generator sit.

So we look at the pad as well as the engine. Is it still level? Has soil washed out from under one edge? Does water pool against the base after a storm? A pad that has tipped puts strain on the gas connection and the conduit. If the pad needs work, we explain what we found and quote it separately.

After a long Washtenaw County outage

Two days after the February 2023 ice storm, about 65,000 DTE customers in Washtenaw County were still without power, roughly 38 percent. A standby generator that carries a house through a stretch like that can log more run time in one week than in a year of exercise runs.

Oil change intervals are counted partly in run hours. Once the lights come back, check the controller for alarm messages and read the hour meter if your model has one. Call us with both, and we will tell you whether the oil is due before the next storm. The weekly exercise run cannot answer that question. It shows the engine starts, but it usually leaves the house on utility power.

DTE, your gas utility and the generator side

DTE Energy supplies electricity across Ann Arbor, Pittsfield and Scio, while Consumers Energy serves parts of far western Washtenaw County. Inside the city, natural gas usually comes from DTE Gas. In the townships, check your bill. Your gas utility owns the meter. We look after the generator, the transfer switch and the wiring between them.

When the fault is in the switch or the panel

Some failures have nothing to do with the engine. A worn contactor in the transfer switch or a loose breaker in the panel can stop the hand-off. Transfer switch installation in Ann Arbor covers the switch side, and our Ann Arbor electricians handle panels and house wiring.

Moving, replacing or retiring an older unit

Oil, filters and battery work keep an existing unit running. Moving the generator, replacing it or swapping the transfer switch is new work. For city addresses, the City of Ann Arbor Building Department issues those permits through its online STREAM system. Pittsfield and Scio townships run their own offices. The Old West Side is a historic district under city ordinances, so ask about review before changing anything visible from the street. Confirm current requirements for your address, and see our generator permit guide for the questions to ask.

When repairs stop making sense

An older generator with repeat failures can cost more to keep alive than to replace. The home generator cost guide explains what moves the price of a new unit, and our page on Generac installation in Ann Arbor covers sizing and placement. If a unit fails in a storm, 24-hour emergency service is available.

To book a visit, send the Ann Arbor service request form or use our main contact page. Have the brand, model and serial number from the unit's label ready.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • It depends on the unit's size, whether it is air-cooled or liquid-cooled, which parts are due and what the inspection finds. You get a free written quote before any work starts, and any repair is quoted separately before we do it.

  • No. Ann Arbor is about 18 to 22 miles from our shop, and we schedule service visits here on planned days. Booking before late fall gives you the widest choice of dates.

  • They can. Leaves, seeds and twigs packed into the louvers cut the cooling air, and an engine that overheats may shut down during an outage. Clear the base by hand with the unit at rest, and never open the enclosure while it is set to automatic.

  • Possibly. Oil intervals are tied partly to run hours, so a long outage can bring the next service forward. Note any alarm messages and the hour reading if your controller shows one, then call us.

  • Yes, for Generac, Honeywell and Kohler units. A first visit tells you the unit's age, the battery's condition and which upkeep was skipped. For another brand, call with the model and serial number from the label.
