3D Electric offers Recessed Lighting Installation Ypsilanti, MI for houses in the city, Ypsilanti Township and Superior Township. We mark out the lights with you, feed them from a circuit with room to spare and finish with a dimmer made for LED loads. This page on Recessed Lighting Installation Ypsilanti, MI explains what changes from one part of the Ypsilanti area to the next: the age of the house, the ceiling above the room and the office that handles the permit.
We are a family-owned, licensed and insured crew working out of our Belleville shop, a short drive east of Ypsilanti on I-94. Quotes are free and written before anyone cuts a hole. Lighting is one of several services on our Ypsilanti electrician page, and the 3D Electric Ypsilanti overview covers the city and the two townships around it.

Lectro's tip
If you can reach the attic above the room, note which way the joists run before the quote visit, since that decides how the rows line up.
One mailing address, three kinds of houses
An Ypsilanti address can mean a Victorian near Depot Town, a ranch in a township subdivision or a newer home on a large Superior Township lot. Each one hides a different ceiling, so the first part of our quote visit is a look above it.
The city and its historic district
Ypsilanti's historic district is the second-largest contiguous one in Michigan. Many of its houses have tall ceilings, plaster on wood lath and a single fixture in the middle of each room. Recessed lights still fit, but the openings are scored and cut by hand, and wire often has to be fished from a closet or the floor above.
Ypsilanti Township subdivisions
The township holds about 24,485 housing units, far more than the city. Most are single-story or two-story houses with drywall ceilings and an attic over the top floor. Attic access makes a row of lights much quicker, since we can set boxes and pull cable from above.
Superior Township and Dixboro
Superior Township is far less dense, with homes spread out around Dixboro and Frains Lake. Some newer houses there have great rooms with sloped or vaulted ceilings, which need fixtures built for a pitched surface.

Spacing recessed lights by ceiling height
A simple starting rule puts lights apart by about half the ceiling height. Older city houses and newer great rooms break the usual 8-foot pattern, so we plan from the height you actually have.
Ceiling | Where you see it here | Starting layout |
|---|---|---|
About 8 feet | Ranches and finished basements | 4 feet apart, thin wafer trims |
9 to 10 feet | Older houses in the city and newer main floors | 4 to 5 feet apart, 6 in. trims |
Sloped or vaulted | Great rooms and upstairs rooms under the roofline | Sloped trims aimed down |
Keep one color temperature in each room. Warm white around 2700K to 3000K suits living rooms and bedrooms, and 3500K to 4000K suits kitchens and work areas. Our recessed lighting service page goes deeper on trims, sizes and controls.
Basements, kitchens and dark front rooms
Most Ypsilanti lighting calls start with one of three rooms.
A basement being finished. With the joists open, we set the boxes and run cable before drywall, then return after paint for the fixtures and dimmers. Ducts and beams decide where each row can go.
A kitchen with one center light. Lights placed over the counter edge put light on the work, not on the back of your head. Pendants over an island can share the plan.
A front room in an older house. A few 6-inch lights on a dimmer replace the floor lamps, and the old center box can stay for a fan or a fixture.
Any light set into a ceiling below the attic must be rated for insulation contact and air-tight. That keeps warm air in the room through a Michigan winter and keeps insulation off the fixture.

Permits from the city or your township
Swapping a fixture on an existing box is usually simple. A new circuit or new wiring for a set of recessed lights often needs an electrical permit, and the office depends on where the lot sits.
City of Ypsilanti: the city Building Department, which uses a trade permit application.
Charter Township of Ypsilanti: the township Building Department, with a rough inspection while the ceiling is open and a final when the job is done.
Superior Township: its own electrical permit application.
Interior lights rarely raise a historic district question. Porch lights or other fixtures on the outside of a historic house are different, so ask the city before you buy them. Forms change, so confirm current requirements for your address. When the job needs a permit, the quote says so and we file it.
When the panel or service needs work first
LED recessed lights draw very little power, so most jobs fit on an existing circuit or one new one. The panel matters when there is no open space for that circuit, or when the house still runs on fuses. In those cases an electrical panel upgrade in Ypsilanti may come before the lights. An older home on a small feed that is also adding central air or a big kitchen may need a 200 amp service upgrade for Ypsilanti homes.
Lights during an outage
The September 2026 storm left thousands of DTE customers dark across ZIP codes 48197 and 48198. A home standby generator can keep your lighting circuits on along with the furnace and sump pump. If that is on your list, ask about generator installation in Ypsilanti at the same visit.

Frequently Asked Questions
Usually, yes. Inside the house, recessed lights rarely raise a historic district question, and we cut plaster openings by hand to limit cracking. Exterior fixtures are a different matter, so ask the city about review before you change porch or front lights.
New wiring or a new circuit for lights often needs an electrical permit. The Charter Township of Ypsilanti Building Department handles permits there, with a rough and a final inspection. Confirm current requirements for your address, and our quote says whether we file one.
Yes, with fixtures or trims made for a sloped surface. A standard flat trim on a pitched ceiling throws light sideways. Sloped-ceiling or adjustable trims aim the light straight down.
A common starting point is about half the ceiling height, so roughly 4 to 5 feet apart. Kitchens and work areas often get more lights, and bedrooms fewer. We mark the spots with you before any cutting.
Not on utility power alone. A home standby generator with a transfer switch can carry your lighting circuits along with the furnace, fridge and sump pump. We can size one at the same visit.
