3D Electric plans each 200 Amp Service Upgrade Ypsilanti, MI job around the house in front of us, whether it sits in the city, Ypsilanti Township or Superior Township. We replace the meter socket, the main disconnect and the service conductors, and we change the panel when it can't keep up. This page on 200 Amp Service Upgrade Ypsilanti, MI covers the local side of the job: which office permits it, what older city houses need and how outbuildings on bigger lots get power.

Our family crew works out of Belleville, a short drive east, and we are licensed and insured with about two decades in the trade. The equipment and the general process are explained on our regional 200 amp service upgrade page. Other electrical work in town is listed on the Ypsilanti electrician page, and the 3D Electric Ypsilanti overview covers the wider area.

Lectro's tip

Look at the number printed on your main breaker before the visit, since that number is the size of the service you have now.

Is 100 amps enough for your Ypsilanti house?

A service rating is a ceiling on how much power the house can draw at one time. Gas heat, a gas range and a couple of window units fit under a 100 amp ceiling. Electric appliances added over the years push past it, and the main breaker starts to trip or the panel runs out of spaces.

Loads that tip a house over

  • A heat pump in place of a gas furnace or an old boiler.

  • A Level 2 charger for a car in the driveway or garage.

  • An electric range, a second air conditioner or a hot tub.

  • A finished basement with its own heat, lights and sump pump.

We run the numbers first

A load calculation adds up what the house may run at the same moment. Sometimes it shows the current service has room, and a new circuit or a panel replacement in Ypsilanti is all you need. When it doesn't, 200 amps is the usual next step for a single-family home.

Which office permits your service change

An Ypsilanti mailing address can belong to three different local governments, and part of Ypsilanti Township even shares the 48111 ZIP code with Belleville. The permit follows the parcel, not the post office.

  • City of Ypsilanti: service work goes on the city Building Department's trade permit application.

  • Charter Township of Ypsilanti: the township Building Department issues the permit and inspects the electrical work.

  • Superior Township: the township uses its own electrical permit application.

We file with the office that covers your lot and meet the inspector there. DTE Energy, the electric utility for the area, reconnects after the work is approved. Forms and steps change from year to year, so confirm current requirements for your address.

Meter placement on historic district houses

The Ypsilanti Historic District is the second-largest contiguous historic district in Michigan. On those streets, a new meter socket, an outdoor disconnect or a taller mast becomes part of what people see from the sidewalk.

A 200 amp upgrade does not always mean moving the meter. When the old spot still meets the utility's meter rules, keeping it there limits changes to the siding and trim. If the meter has to move, ask the City of Ypsilanti whether historic review applies before the job goes on the calendar.

Overhead or underground

Many older streets are fed by overhead drops. Burying the new service keeps it away from limbs, but it means a trench across the yard, and DTE sets its own conduit and meter requirements. We plan the trench path with you and call MISS DIG 811 before anyone digs.

Storm-damaged masts and meter bases

Wind and falling limbs keep testing the service drops around town. In June 2021, between 1,500 and 2,500 customers lost power between Michigan Avenue and Stony Creek Road. In September 2026, poles and lines came down on several city streets. A limb on the drop can pull hard enough to bend a mast or crack a meter base off the wall.

Keep clear of any wire on the ground and call 911 and DTE first. 24-hour emergency service is available for the building side once DTE has made its line safe. If the damaged equipment was rated for 100 amps, ask us to price a 200 amp replacement next to the like-for-like repair, since the mast and meter base are coming off anyway.

Pole barns and shops on Superior Township lots

Superior Township is far less crowded than the city, with wooded parcels, open fields and homes around Dixboro and Frains Lake. A pole barn or workshop set back from the house needs power of its own, and a 200 amp house service often leaves enough room to feed it.

Feeder or second service

A feeder runs from the house panel to a subpanel in the outbuilding. A separate DTE service gives the building its own meter instead. Distance, the size of the load and your plans for the space decide which one we quote.

Before the trench

Show us where the well line, the septic field and any sprinkler pipes run. Longer trenches add wire, conduit and digging time, so we pace the path out with you during the visit.

Your service upgrade, step by step

  1. Free visit. We check the meter, the mast or buried feed, the panel and the grounding, and list what you plan to add.

  2. Written quote. Scope and price on paper before any work, with no hidden charges.

  3. Permit and DTE date. We file with your city or township and book the disconnect.

  4. Work day. Power goes off while we replace the service equipment and grounding, plus the panel if it is part of the job.

  5. Sign-off. The inspector approves the work and DTE restores power.

What moves the price

  • Overhead drop or buried service, and the trench length

  • Whether the panel is replaced in the same job

  • Moving the meter, especially on a historic district house

  • New circuits for the heat pump, charger or outbuilding

Thinking about backup power too? A standby generator's transfer switch should match the new 200 amp service, so our standby generator installation in Ypsilanti can be planned alongside it. Extra capacity is also a good time to add recessed lighting installation in Ypsilanti. To get started, send the Ypsilanti quote request form or use our main contact page.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • It depends on the parcel. The City of Ypsilanti, the Charter Township of Ypsilanti and Superior Township each permit their own service work, and some township homes even carry a 48111 ZIP code. Your property tax bill names your local government, and we file with that office.

  • Not always. If the current spot still meets DTE's meter requirements, the new socket can often go in the same place. In the historic district, ask the city about review before any change that shows from the street.

  • Yes, when the load calculation supports it. If the mast or meter base has to be replaced anyway, we can quote a like-for-like repair and a 200 amp option side by side. 24-hour emergency service is available for storm damage.

  • For many single-family homes, yes. The load calculation at the free visit checks the heat pump, the charger and everything else that may run at once. Very large all-electric homes sometimes need more, and we tell you if yours does.

  • Yes. We run a feeder to a subpanel or set up a separate DTE service with its own meter, depending on distance and load. Superior Township has its own electrical permit application, and we file it.

  • It depends on the scope of the job and on DTE's disconnect and reconnect schedule. You get the plan ahead of time, so you can keep the fridge closed and arrange for the sump pump.
