3D Electric plans and installs each 200 Amp Service Upgrade Belleville, MI project from our own shop in Belleville, 48111, so the crew and the paperwork stay close to home. Plenty of houses in the city, in Van Buren Township and out in Sumpter Township still run on 60 or 100 amp service that was sized long before central air, hot tubs and EV chargers. This page on 200 Amp Service Upgrade Belleville, MI covers the local side of the job: DTE's line rebuild, storm damage, the three permit offices and long runs to barns and shops.
We are a family-owned, licensed and insured electrical contractor with about two decades of work in this area. The equipment and the full process are on our 200 amp service upgrade overview for Southeast Michigan. For the rest of our work in town, visit the Belleville electrician page.

Lectro's tip
After a windstorm, look up where the wires meet your house; a bent mast or a sagging drop is worth a call before the next storm.
DTE's Belleville rebuild and the part of the service you own
DTE Energy is partway through rebuilding Belleville's electric system: about 10 miles of new overhead lines and poles, tree trimming and a larger substation. Roughly three miles along High Street and W. Huron River Drive were done by November 2025.
That work stops where the utility's equipment ends. DTE owns the drop wires and, in most cases, the meter. The mast, weatherhead, service conductors, meter socket, main breaker and grounding on your house belong to you. New poles on your street will not fix a rusted socket or a mast that is pulling away from the siding.
Signs your side of the service needs attention
The main breaker trips when the dryer, the oven and the air conditioner run together.
The house still has a fuse box, a 60 amp main or a 100 amp panel with no open spaces.
The meter socket is rusted, cracked or has scorch marks around it.
The mast leans, or the weatherhead on top has lost its cap.
You plan an EV charger, a heat pump, a hot tub or power for an outbuilding.

Older houses in town and newer Van Buren subdivisions
Belleville was platted in 1847 and became a city in 1946. It counted 1,972 housing units in 2020. Many of the older ones were built for far smaller loads. The city is fully surrounded by Van Buren Township, so a short drive can take you from a century-old house to a newer subdivision.
Older homes near downtown
Many still have the original overhead service and a ground that relies on a single bond to a metal water pipe. If a plumber has replaced part of that pipe with plastic, the bond may be gone. A new 200 amp service adds ground rods and fresh bonding that the inspector checks today.
Van Buren neighborhoods
In places such as Belleville North, Edgewater Heights, French Landing and Rawsonville, the question is usually about added load rather than old wiring. A Level 2 charger, a finished basement or a hot tub can push a 100 amp service over the line. A load calculation at the free estimate shows whether yours has room.
When a storm tears the service off the house
The National Weather Service confirmed an EF1 tornado on April 4, 2026 that touched down south of Martz Road, tracked northeast along Hull Road and crossed Sumpter Road. Wind and falling limbs bend masts, snap weatherheads and rip meter sockets off walls.
What to do first
Stay well away from any wire on the ground or hanging low.
Call 911, then report the damage to DTE.
Once DTE has made its side safe, call us to rebuild the mast, socket and grounding.
24-hour emergency service available. If the old service was too small, the rebuild is a sensible time to go to 200 amps. DTE reconnects after the work is approved.

Pole barns and long trenches in Sumpter Township
Sumpter Township spreads over about 37 square miles with roughly 259 people per square mile. That leaves room for pole barns, shops and detached garages set far back from the house.
Feeder or separate service
An outbuilding gets power one of two ways. A feeder runs from the house panel to a subpanel in the barn, which suits lighter loads. A separate DTE service with its own meter can make more sense for a distant building or a welder and compressor. Distance and load decide it, and a house that feeds a barn often needs 200 amps itself.
Before the trench is dug
MISS DIG 811 marks the public utility lines. It does not mark private lines, and on acreage those matter. Show us where your well line, septic tank, irrigation and any buried yard-light wire run. Depth and conduit type follow code and DTE's rules.
Permits for a service upgrade in Belleville
Every service change needs an electrical permit, and in most cases the inspector approves the work before DTE restores power. Which office issues it depends on which side of the city line your house sits:
City of Belleville: the city Building Department.
Van Buren Charter Township: the Building, Planning and Economic Development department, which accepts permit applications online.
Sumpter Township: the township office; ask about its current process.
Confirm current requirements for your address before the work is scheduled. A Belleville mailing address can belong to any of the three.
Work worth doing while the power is off
Most service changes include a new breaker panel, covered on our page about panel replacement for Belleville homes. The extra capacity is also a good reason to add circuits for kitchen, porch and yard lighting in Belleville.
Planning the service around a standby generator
We have installed a 35 kW Generac and a 22 kW Honeywell home standby generator for Belleville households, and we install 200 amp automatic transfer switches. The transfer switch is rated to match the service, so a house moving from 100 to 200 amps needs a switch sized for the new service. Planning both at once means one design and fewer shutoffs. Our generator installation in Belleville page covers that side.
What moves the price
Overhead or underground service, and the length of any trench.
Whether the panel changes at the same time.
The condition of the mast, meter socket and grounding you have now.

Frequently Asked Questions
Not always. A smaller home with gas heat and a gas range can run fine on 100 amps. If you are adding central air, an EV charger, a hot tub or a heat pump, a load calculation at the free estimate shows whether you need more.
No. DTE's rebuild covers its poles, lines and substations. The mast, meter socket, main breaker and grounding on your house are yours, and their size and condition stay the same until you replace them.
It depends on your address. The City of Belleville, Van Buren Charter Township and Sumpter Township each run their own permit office. Confirm current requirements for your address before the work is scheduled.
Stay away from the wires and call 911, then DTE. Once DTE has made its side safe, we rebuild the mast, meter socket and grounding that belong to you. 24-hour emergency service available.
Yes. We look at the distance and the loads, then plan either a feeder from the house panel or a separate DTE service with its own meter. Mark your well line and septic before we dig.
If the service is too small or worn, do both together. The automatic transfer switch is rated to match the service, so planning them as one job avoids buying a switch twice.
