Most calls start with a breaker that will not stay on, a fuse box an insurer asked about, or a new appliance with no space left for its breaker. This page on Electrical Panel Upgrade Belleville, MI shows how we decide what your house needs, how the swap day goes with DTE, and which office signs the permit.

Lectro's tip
Keep a flashlight by the panel and a printed breaker list on its door, so nobody has to guess in the dark.
Signs a Belleville panel is past its limit
The City of Belleville counted 1,972 housing units in 2020, and Van Buren Township wraps around it with newer subdivisions. These are the signs we see most often.
A fuse box or split-bus panel in an older city house
Some homes near Main Street still run on screw-in fuses, or on a panel with no single main breaker. Both were built for far smaller loads than a modern kitchen.
A sump pump on a crowded panel
Finished basements near the lake and the Huron River lean hard on sump pumps. If the pump shares a circuit in a full panel, one tripped breaker during a spring thaw can mean a wet floor.
No spaces left in a Van Buren subdivision panel
A panel that looked roomy at move-in fills up after a basement finish, a hot tub and a car charger. Two wires under one breaker screw are the giveaway.
Federal Pacific or Zinsco equipment
Both brands have a long record of breakers that may not trip when they should. We will tell you plainly what is in your wall.
New panel or a bigger service? How we decide
At the visit we open the panel, check the meter base and run a load calculation that includes your plans. The answer usually lands in one of these rows.
What we find | The usual job |
|---|---|
Fuse box or split-bus panel | A new breaker panel, often with more amps |
Full 100 amp panel, gas heat, no big additions planned | A larger panel on the same service |
100 amp service with central air, an electric dryer and a charger on the way | A service upgrade with a new 200 amp panel |
200 amp panel in good shape but out of spaces | Listed tandem breakers or a subpanel |
A panel brand with a poor record | Replacement, whatever its size |
A panel can never deliver more than the service feeding it. When the math calls for more capacity, the job becomes a 200 amp service upgrade in Belleville, with the meter base and service wires replaced as well.
Feeding a pole barn or garage on Sumpter acreage
Sumpter Township is rural, at roughly 259 people per square mile, and many lots carry a pole barn, a detached garage or a workshop. Power for those buildings starts at the house panel.
The main panel needs a free double-pole space for the feeder breaker.
The feeder runs underground in conduit, so the trench length shows up in the quote.
The outbuilding gets its own subpanel, disconnect and grounding electrodes, as the code calls for on a separate building.
If the house panel is already full, we usually quote the new panel and the barn feed as one job.
Getting the panel ready for a generator
The July 3, 2026 storm left about 400,000 DTE customers across Southeast Michigan in the dark. A generator plan for outages like that begins at the panel.
Whole-house backup
A service-rated automatic transfer switch sits between the meter and the panel. Load management modules keep the range, dryer and air conditioner from all running on generator power at once.
Essential circuits only
A smaller transfer switch with its own breaker section carries a short list you choose: furnace, sump pump, fridge and a few lights. We move those circuits out of the main panel during the upgrade.
For the generator itself, see our standby generator installation in Belleville.

How the swap day goes, and DTE's part
We set the date with you once the permit is issued.
If the meter has to come off, DTE Energy disconnects the service on its own schedule, and we plan the day around it.
The old panel comes out and the new one goes in, with arc-fault and ground-fault breakers where current code calls for them.
Every circuit is reconnected, tested and listed on a printed directory.
The inspector checks the work, and the power comes back on.
Expect the house to be without power for part of the day. DTE is rebuilding about 10 miles of overhead lines and poles in Belleville, starting with West Huron River Drive and High Street. That work stops at DTE's equipment. The panel, meter base and service wires on your house are what we replace.
Permits on both sides of the city line
Belleville sits fully inside Van Buren Township, so neighbors a block apart can file with different offices. A panel replacement usually needs an electrical permit and an inspection either way.
Inside city limits: the City of Belleville Building Department.
Van Buren Charter Township: the Building, Planning and Economic Development department, which accepts permit applications online.
Sumpter Township: we confirm the township's current process for each address.
Forms and fees vary, so confirm current requirements for your address before work is booked.
What moves the price of a Belleville panel job
We quote after we see the panel. These items change the number most:
A panel swap alone, or a full service upgrade with a new meter base
How many circuits need new wire ends, splices or rework
A pole barn feeder, transfer switch or charger circuit added at the same time
Permit fees set by the city or township
Your written estimate lists the work in detail with no hidden charges, and financing is available. If a basement finish is coming, add recessed lighting installation in Belleville to the same plan so the new panel has spaces for it. The regional electrical panel upgrade service page has more detail. To book a visit, use the Belleville quote request page or our main contact page.

Frequently Asked Questions
A fuse box can still work, but it has few circuits, and a fuse can be swapped for one too large for the wire behind it. Most homes are better served by a breaker panel sized for today's loads. Some insurers also ask about fuse boxes, so check with yours.
Yes. The house panel needs a free double-pole space for the feeder breaker, and the barn gets its own subpanel and grounding. If the house panel is already full, we often quote a new panel and the barn feed together.
Often, yes. When the meter has to come off or the service is replaced, DTE Energy handles the disconnect and reconnect on its own schedule. We plan the day around that step and tell you ahead of time when the power will be off.
Van Buren Charter Township's Building, Planning and Economic Development department, which takes applications online. Only homes inside the city limits file with the City of Belleville. Confirm current requirements for your address before work is booked.
Yes. Tell us at the visit, and we lay out the panel with spaces and circuits grouped for a future transfer switch. That keeps us from moving the same wires twice when the generator goes in.
Many electricians recommend it, because both brands have a long record of breakers that may not trip when they should. We check what is in your wall, tell you plainly what we see and quote a replacement if it makes sense.
